Personal Note: Yes, China now celebrates 40th Anniversary of Deng Xiaoping’s Reform and Opening up of China 40 years ago in 1978! Chairman Mao would not be able to recognize it if he were to visit China today…incredible modernization, globalization and internationalization in about 40 years! Glory to China, land of my forefathers…my grandparents escaped from turbulent and violent China in 1903 to escape death, starvation and many natural disasters and tribal warfare within China…to Malaya. He returned many times later and died in China, buried in Fuqing, next to Fuzhou city. I am proud of my grandparents. My aunt’s son and his wife and his children and grandchildren are doing very well in China today. I visited my cousin brother a few times when I was a visiting professor in China, only about 4 hours away from Xiamen University campus. Long live China. An exhibition celebrating the 40th anniversary of China’s reform and opening-up was held on Saturday, reflecting the changes over the past 40 years through photos taken by Chinese and foreign photographers.
Referring to a series of photographs taken by five foreign photographers in about 1978, photos taken at the same sites reflecting similar scenes are collected nationwide to show the 40 years’ changes in a more intuitive way.
Let’s take a look at these changes through the following photos.
